Ricola aimed to reposition its brand within a younger Panamanian audience. The primary goal was to increase brand awareness among a tech-savvy demographic through an innovative and engaging campaign that would spark conversation, incentivize purchases, and build digital relevance.

The Challenge
Despite Ricola’s longstanding reputation in the herbal remedy category, the brand struggled with relevancy among younger consumers in Panama. The perception was dated, and Ricola risked becoming invisible to a generation driven by interactivity, digital convenience, and reward-based engagement. The task required not just a creative spark, but a structural repositioning: turning Ricola into a brand worth talking about.

The Approach
POPCORN LABS developed a campaign strategy rooted in gamification, first-party data collection, and AI-powered interactivity. The customer journey began with in-store QR codes and digital ads that led users to a custom WhatsApp chatbot. There, users were prompted to upload a photo of their Ricola box. An AI-based image recognition system validated each submission, filtering fraudulent entries and ensuring campaign integrity.
Upon verification, users unlocked a month-long series of interactive challenges, including trivia and product-based tasks that awarded points. Repeat purchases were incentivized by allowing users to upload additional boxes for more points. The gamified layer turned Ricola into a collectible experience.
High-value prizes — such as PlayStation 5s, Netflix gift cards, and Spotify subscriptions — were tailored to resonate with the audience’s lifestyle. The entire system was backed by a frictionless UX and automated tracking, ensuring participation remained high.
